Do Not Let Sin Reign Over You

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:12-14

From Background Notes [BN] written by Pastor Bob Brown:

We’ve been baptized into Christ – so don’t let sin reign in your body. Romans 6:3-10 outlines this baptism process with Christ. We are new creations and our baptism is an outward symbol of an inward work and this weekend we have several believers coming forth to be baptized.

We celebrate the baptismal experience this week in our own church’s life. Historically, we join with countless followers of Jesus since the earliest days of the Christian church in welcoming persons to the body of faithful disciples who belong to Jesus Christ. Baptism consistently testifies to both the commitment we make and to the sense of belonging that we experience. At the same time baptism is a public confession of the new identity we have in the midst of the world. This baptismal identity, as some of us like to call it, puts persons on the record as refusing to compromise with the surrounding world system and its seductions to worship other gods. When we are baptized, we make a renewed commitment to take up the cross and follow Jesus, even to death if need be. Baptism tells the church and the world, “I’m in this for the long-haul. ‘No turning back, no turning back.’” [BN, 1]
