Gaston?

"You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?" Romans 2:23

You remember Gaston from Beauty and Beast right?  Not attractive to brag about your physique.  How much less attractive to brag about your righteousness??

From Background Notes [BN] for October 1 & 2 written by Pastor Bob Brown:

To read the full Passage: Romans 2:17-29

“You who brag…,” Paul comments [in verse 23], “dishonor God.” Religious zeal for righteousness throws the spotlight on the performance of the individual rather than on the person of God.  He further cites the ancient scripture from Isaiah 52:5 and Ezekiel 36:22 which says, “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”  When outsiders witness the arrogance of religious people who do their best to disqualify others so that they can qualify themselves, their natural response is to turn away in disgust and to discount the integrity of any religion that so demeans other human beings for the sake of oneself. To make oneself look good at the expense of others is to act like the sinners Paul described in Romans 1:18-32.  [BN, 4]
