1 Samuel 3:2

One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.

From Background Notes [BN] for May 25th & 26th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Biblical writers in the Old Testament are fond of making puns as a way of teaching truth. What happened to Eli’s physical eyesight was a reflection of what had happened to the whole nation’s spiritual vision.  In a sense, Eli symbolized the lack of hearing and recognizing the word of God.

Such deprivation put Eli out of service, in his room, and isolated from the unraveling culture around him. For the nation as a whole, because the people refused to see and hear the word of God, He withheld His word and His vision from them. What would be needed was a young child from a new generation who was yet undamaged by the agnostic social forces.  [BN, 2]
