Luke 24:31

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

From Background Notes [BN] for January 5th & 6th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Here, then, is the moment of their Illumination. They see now what they failed to see before.

With new eyes they recognize Jesus: eyes to their hearts which “burned within them as he opened the Scriptures” (24:32); eyes which recognize him in the “breaking of the bread” — something they recall when they finally arrive in Jerusalem once more (24:35). What are we to make of his vanishing? I suspect it has to do with preparing them for the newly framed relationship they would have with him in the future. Like Mary Magdalene and Thomas, they must not become too accustomed to the tangible Jesus who is always visible. He will not always be visible. Yet their experience on the road and at the table is his assurance to them that he will yet always be present! [BN, 8]
