“What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

Is Pilate, then, a truth-seeker, or is he a quintessential cynic who questions whether truth refers to anything meaningful.

 
Might he be among those who think that truth is what you make it? Or, is he saying by his question, that there is no truth — nothing higher than sheer power — the kind Pilate is used to handling. For centuries, interpreters have attempted a final answer to the meaning of the question. Sometimes ambiguity is the best teacher, and so we are left hanging on those murky words.  [BN, 11]
