From Background Notes
[BN] for January 12th & 13th written by Pastor Bob
Brown:
Indonesia was once untouched by the
modern world. In the 1950’s the missionary, Don Richardson, began ministering
to the Swami, a group of headhunters and cannibals.
They accepted the white missionaries whom they regarded as not quite human, though they knew they were different from the spirits. Don learned their language and customs, so that he might teach them God’s Word about creation, sin, salvation, and Jesus. When Don told them about Judas Iscariot, they suddenly grew interested in how Judas’s relationship with Jesus cloaked his betrayal in Gethsemane. Hearing this, they cheered! In their culture such treachery and deception were virtues, present in many of their own legends. What they valued was “fattening with friendship” of an unsuspecting victim, before killing and eating him. To them Judas was the hero of the story. [BN, 1-2]
