This is a story about cunning and
transformation, and it undercuts any false illusions about the effectiveness of
change-on-demand. Oh, Jacob may have
wrenched the birthright from Esau for “a mess of pottage,” but…
…he would not so easily win for himself the intended benefits. For those, he will need, not grasping, but the promise. He, too, will need to make an exchange, not with Esau, but with God. [BN, 5]
