Deuteronomy 8:17-18

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

From Background Notes [BN] for Oct 31st & Nov 1st written by Pastor Bob Brown:

We live in a world of “the self-made men,” who on this basis claim to own what they produce.

The Torah text above says otherwise. Forgetting that “ability” is not of their own making, human beings make outlandish claims that they can make the world without God. Consider the absurdity of this. A child is conceived and born without his own consent or contribution. Life springs at conception without the child’s initiative or agency. DNA strands direct the formation of his body, a mother supports his nourishment, a doctor aids his delivery, and in the short-term his fragile existence depends on the attentiveness of others. One day, years later, he achieves great success building a commercial empire. He could be Henry Ford or Bill Gates or Donald Trump. His identity and claim to fame all depend on God “who gives the ability to produce wealth.” [BN,7]
