We call it “stewardship,” the activity
of having and using the gifts of creation. Implicit in the idea is our awareness
that “having” is conditional and does not involve actual ownership of what we
have.
“Having” places things like time,
money, and possessions into a sacred trust for which we are responsible. But “having”
is filled with acknowledgement that life is on loan to us, and we must treat it
with respect out of love for God who gave it to us. “Using” points to our
deployment of this trust in ways that further God’s interests in the world. [BN,1]
