Luke 1:1-2

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

From Background Notes [BN] for May 3rd & 4th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

For the New Testament writers, knowing that Jesus appeared mattered, largely because critics of the Christian message doubted the stories about Jesus, especially when they claimed Jesus rose from the dead.

To counter this skepticism, the followers of Jesus appealed to their role as eyewitnesses.  [BN,2]
