John 12:5-7

“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?”  (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.)  Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial.

From Background Notes [BN] for April 11th & 12th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

What is important to notice is the connection Jesus draws between the anointing of his "feet" and his coming death and burial.

Coming so soon afterwards, chapter 13's account of the foot-washing strongly points in the same direction. What Jesus intended was to dramatize, in the first instance, his coming suffering and death, fulfilling what John told us in 13:1, "having loved his own, he loved them to the very end".  [BN, 5]
