Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

From Background Notes [BN] for January 25th & 26th  written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Sound familiar? The words echo what we heard from Moses, Joshua, Elijah, and in the deeds of Gideon. Put differently, Jesus is saying, “You can’t have life on your own terms; you can’t live in two narratives; you can’t serve God and Baal.”

Living in both stories is an impossibility that is destined to create anxiety and depression, verging on despair. The time has come to make up your mind, face reality, tear down the old failed religion of self-reliant accumulation, and make room for the new way of loving obedience to the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Like Gideon and his village, there can be no way forward until the altar of Baal is gone and the altar of Yahweh stands in its place; until self-interest gives way to others interest. [BN,13]
