From
Background Notes [BN] for January 25th & 26th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
And so, when Gideon hears the command
of Lord Yahweh and agrees to obey it, he takes on a whole world of self-serving
religion that has overwhelmed his nation. Before he can possibly defeat the
Midianite servants of Baal, he needs to defeat Baal in his midst and in his
heart.
As we have already seen in the cases of Moses, Joshua, and later Elijah Yahweh will not allow any other gods before him. Yahweh will brook no rival in human hearts. He desires to live fully in the hearts of His people, in the midst of their land, but he will not live in the big house with Pharaoh — or Baal. By seizing his father’s prize bull, Gideon seizes the great symbol of servile religion that fills the heart with selfishness and greed, for the bull was Baal’s icon. Or, if we are not over analyzing the text too much, Yahweh will accept no bull from Baal! [BN,2]
