Judges 6:34-35

Then the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Gideon, and he blew the trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him.  He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulon and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.

From Background Notes [BN] for February 1st & 2nd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

As Boling observes, “Gideon was regularly slow to respond and characteristically overreacted.” That is why the presence of the Spirit is crucial.

Alternative textual traditions refer the Spirit’s relationship to Gideon as either “clothing” or “strengthening.” Butler, in his textual commentary, says “both of which make sense.” What follows is genuinely a new story, and Gideon doesn’t need to do anything to prompt the events that intrude upon him as “mighty warrior”! How often do events make persons by their abrupt incursion, thrust upon ordinary souls, transforming them into extraordinary characters?  [BN,3]
