From
Background Notes [BN] for January 25th & 26th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
Before
Gideon could step a single foot on the battlefield, he needed to put his own
house in order, and in so doing clarify the loyalty of his own heart.
To
the ancient historians who gave us this text, this man stands in company with
the likes of Moses, Joshua, and Elijah, ordained by God as leaders — in the
words of Lowell — at the “moment to decide.” Gideon needed to have a serious
conversation with God, his own family, and his townsfolk — a conversation of
actions not just words. [BN,2]
