Judges 6:36-37

Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised—  look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”

From Background Notes [BN] for February 1st & 2nd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Readers sometimes see a delaying tactic in what Gideon asked from the Lord, an effort to weasel out of his assignment. More serious are suggestions that he was manipulating God.

Which of these applies to Gideon, we can’t be sure. It is the work of the darkened soul to expose itself to the light, and God often permits considerable room for our self-discovery in order to accomplish His ultimate purposes.  [BN,5]
