Genesis 37:19-20

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

From Background Notes [BN] for June 28th & 29th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief". Those words were not written about Joseph, but about the Suffering Servant of the Lord in Isaiah 53. Yet...

...they might well apply to our young "prince". And so father Jacob sends him on a mission that would lead to his rejection by the brothers. "Go to Shechem", Jacob requests, "and check on your brothers". At last notice (35:27), Jacob had buried his father Isaac at Mamre (or Hebron) and presumably it is from this area (see 37:1) that Joseph sets out traveling north some fifty miles to Shechem, following the western edge of the Judean hill country. No doubt the brothers were in search of suitable pasturage for their father's (and their) flocks, but such a long distance may have been their natural retreat from a household where Joseph had assumed his favored role. [BN,1]
