James 1:6

But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

From Background Notes [BN] for January 28th/29th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Does this mean that a person will receive anything he asks for if he simply believes?

Common sense and honest experience suggests otherwise. Not everything is good for us; not everything is God’s will for us. Adding a little faith, like a recipe ingredient, doesn’t guarantee automatic answers to prayer. However, if we understand the word “believe” in the sense of trust within a growing relationship, the meaning shifts dramatically. What we ask for belongs to the environment of our trust relationship with God. Before we ask for anything, we consult that trust relationship, consider the importance of what we ask for our spiritual development, and test the request against what we know about the will of God. What such a dynamic process does is filter out selfish or fleshly desires so that the more beneficial petitions replace the more worldly ones. [BN,4]
