1 Samuel 1:9-11

Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up.  Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD’s house.  In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.  And she made a vow, saying, “LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

From Background Notes [BN] for January 21st/22nd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Hannah stands in the presence of the Lord, symbolized by the sacred tabernacle and its High Priest.

We might say, she decided to take her stand before the Lord in opposition to the depressing reality conjured up by the dinner table. “Enough is enough!” she in effect communicated by her actions. She revealed what Jewish folk have come to call chutzpah, a willingness to overstep the boundaries of accepted behavior, in this case, to redress an old grievance. Here, then, is one of the marvelous purposes of prayer: to take our stand before the Lord in the face of the intolerable circumstances around us. Hannah seeks an audience with the Great King, the Lord Judge, and the One who makes all things right.[BN,2-4]
