Matthew 4:15-16

"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

Matthew refers to Jesus’ ministry in Capernaum, near Zebulun and Napthtali, as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy (9:2).  Capernaum was the home of Peter and became Jesus’ base of operations during his ministry in the largely Gentile area of Galilee.  The Jewish leaders generally showed disdain for anyone who came from this region stating, “a prophet does not come out of Galilee” (John 7:52). Yet, their contempt was misdirected because one of Israel’s greatest prophets had come from a town in then present day Galilee (Jonah – 2 Kings 14:25).
