Jonah 4:2

He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

From Background Notes [BN] for Aug 27th & 28th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Last week’s study told the story of a nation in mourning, fasting, and shared repentance, from the least to the greatest of the Ninevites.

Starting with the grassroots commoners and  spreading to the royal court of the king, people turned to the God with the hope that God would turn away from His intended judgment on Nineveh. We marveled at the level of heart-felt change in the lives of pagans who belonged to an Empire that looked at power and conquest as their real god, and then changed its mind, at least for a time. In that account God also changed His mind about the outcome. The lesson was clear: God is willing to accept even those who do not belong to the chosen people of Israel. [BN,1]
