But Jonah ran away from the Lord
and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for
that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to
flee from the Lord.

And so, when Yahweh calls Jonah, he
is, in effect, calling for Israel to assume her rightful role in the world.
But, like Jonah, Israel was running
the other way, far away from her true calling. Mired in worldly affairs, her
leaders are no better than the pagans. How can they witness for Yahweh? [BN,4]
