1 Samuel 1:7

This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

Hannah no doubt lived with all the social shame of barrenness. The historian lets us think about that reality for at least a few more verses...



...pondering its significance, and perhaps thinking how we might feel if we were in Hannah's situation. What sorts of predicaments are we facing which don't seem to be under our control, yet which cast a shadow over everything we do or think? To what extent do they rob us of celebration? How do we imagine we could be set free from these hindrances? In what sense could celebration then return to us? [BN,5]
