Matthew 26:36

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

From Background Notes [BN] for Sept 5th & 6th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

We might wish to have been there, a bit like the Lenten spiritual, "Were You There?" Would we have been with Jesus, at his side, or sleeping with the others?

Or too frightened by the scene, would we have remained on the periphery, not knowing what to do? Frankly, it makes no difference. In his wisdom, Jesus held back this first-hand look at his agony in Gethsemane, and even his own disciples captured but glimpses of it between their slumbers. When we read the four Gospels, we find distinctive elements of the Gethsemane scene in each (Matthew 26:36-56; Mark 14:32-52; Luke 22:39-53; John 18:1-11; 12:27). Our present study will trace over these texts, borrowing thoughts from each, and noting the differences. Although we have chosen Matthew 26 as the "home" text for our study, we will give consideration to the earlier version found in Mark who was likely the first Gospel writer, historically speaking.
