2 Samuel 12:9

Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

From Background Notes [BN] for Aug 1st & 2nd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

As long as David’s sins remained secret, they were the seeds of a giant threatening to slay him.

Drilling deep into his subconscious self, the hidden crimes against Uriah and Bathsheba would grow into moral tumors with roots into his soul, mortal wounds to his conscience, and fatal blows to his free will that would leave him in perpetual bondage. David needed to be set free before the giant of guilt and shame reduced him to the helpless shell of a man. By confronting his wrongdoing, Nathan graced David with liberating truth and truthful liberation. Public disgrace would not be the end of the world for David, but instead become the agent for his eventual salvation. It would bring the king to confession and ultimate forgiveness. But salvation comes at a painful price, for both the sinner and the agent of his salvation. Innocence would be sacrificed at the hands of the guilty party. Redemption works that way, as the Gospel discloses to us. [BN,8]
