Psalm 33:18-20

But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.

From Background Notes [BN] for May 16th & 17th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Hope, then, is rooted in what God has pledged, under oath, to His people.

Great precious promises unite God to the future of His people, and it is through them that His people may hope for His protection in the present. Horses, kings, and human power all fail eventually. Nothing based on invention or contrivance lasts forever. All empires have their day, and then they cease. Only those for whom God is their Lord may have confidence about the future, all else is “sinking sand.” This is especially true when human beings face death and scarcity (33:19). There are no guarantees against the inevitability of death: what can save us from that? [BN,7]
