Jude 1:3

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

From Background Notes [BN] for May 9th & 10th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Faith as trust is a central theme of the Bible, starting with Abraham’s faith that was a sign of his right relationship with God (Genesis 15:6).  But there is another meaning for the term “faith.”

Jude, in the text above, calls this “the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.” You see, followers of Jesus hold to a body of belief, a shared confession of faith that states what we believe. The Apostle Creed, for example, begins, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth…” When the early church worked out an agreed statement of belief to properly express (confess) important truths about the nature of Jesus, God’s Son, it presented those in the form of the Nicene Creed which opens with: “We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth …” [BN,15]
