Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

From Background Notes [BN] for May 23rd & 24th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Each expression of love, the Spirit's unified fruit, works itself into the spiritual growth of God's people. Fruitbearing is a fitting metaphor, for it emphasizes that the development of Spiritual Life...

... is not an overnight affair or an immediate effect of becoming a Christian. Growth, cultivation, and nurture must accompany our "walk" in the Spirit if his fruit is to appear in our lives.

But no fruitful tree prospers without cultivation. The moral life of the Christian requires attentive keepers of the orchard. Fruit must be inspected from time to time. Branches must be trimmed. Fallen limbs, heavy with fruit, must be lifted up. Dry ground requires moisture. And fruit is meant to be picked and shared with others, not kept on the tree as attractive decorations for passersby. Still, the master Gardener sends His Spirit into receptive hearts, and with their willing cooperation, as co-workers with God, they bring forth fruit. [BN,14]
