John 14:1-2

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.  My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

From Background Notes [BN] for October 12th & 13th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

We are inclined to use this text at funerals and to relate Jesus’ promise to either heaven or his Second Coming. Those interpretations are certainly possible, but they are not at all exhaustive of Jesus’ intentions.

A more immediate and natural handling of the text is to say that Jesus went away in death and came again in resurrection after having prepared a secure home for his followers in the Father’s house. The death and resurrection of Jesus are the primary events that prepared the house of God, the body of Christ, and made them the distinct people of God. In any event, resurrection is proof that Jesus is the man who won’t go away. [BN,10-11]
