Deuteronomy 4:9

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

From Background Notes [BN] for November 2nd & 3rd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

“Teach them” involves the Hebrew verb yāda‘, which has to do with “making known” and “learn to know,” having to do with not only knowledge, but with experience, recognition, and skill.

Parents were to familiarize their children with the things their own eyes had actually seen. This served two purposes: faith in Yahweh as Israel’s God, and the desire to see fresh wonders in their own lifetimes. Taught properly, children ought to expect that the God of the Exodus would become their God. If Exodus was more than a fanciful tale, children had every reason to anticipate God’s future actions of the same kind. By “making known,” the previous generation laid the foundation for an enduring faith community, starting with the children and grandchildren. [BN,6]
