Romans 11:2-4

God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah-- how he appealed to God against Israel: "Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me"? And what was God's answer to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” (zebub)

From Background Notes [BN] for February 11th/12th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

God’s answer did not accept the premises of Elijah’s request, namely, that he was the only righteous man left in Israel.

God does not always accept our premises that lie behind what we ask Him for. He often responds to our premises and not only to our prayers. He may use our prayers to help us see those premises and then change the direction of our praying.[BN, 2]
