Luke 5:11

So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

From Background Notes [BN] for March 3rd/4th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Jesus does not call his disciples in the midst of their failures.

He might have called them while they were stewing over their lousy catch the night before. He might have said to them, “You’re obviously not having much success at fishing, so why not join me in a really exciting venture?” Instead, Jesus helped them become successful at fishing, overwhelming them in the daylight with a catch of fish they had only dreamed about at night! But then, he pointed them toward a future that would ask them to “pull their boats on shore, leave everything, and follow him” (5:11). By structuring the circumstances in this way, the disciples were actually leaving something big and not something disastrous. Seeing all those fish filling their boats, the first disciples might well have said to themselves, “Maybe there’s a future in fishing after all.” Only after they knew this success would they come to experience the true cost of discipleship that leaves behind all such possibilities for the unknown future promised by Jesus. We do not leave behind our poverty, but our wealth.  [BN, 3]
