Daniel 9:3

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

From Background Notes [BN] for February 11th/12th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

We have to assume that Daniel was a careful reader of Jeremiah, and therefore he knew that the exile was due to Israel’s grievous sins against God.

Although God promised restoration after seventy years, Daniel knew that restoration was not automatic but required a true change of heart on the part of the people of God. Things had gone wrong because people broke Yahweh’s covenant, leading up to the crisis of 587 B.C. Jerusalem was destroyed along with its Temple, and its people were taken into captivity. From his reading of the Hebrew Bible, Daniel knew about God’s agenda for full restoration, and prayer was Daniel’s order of business! [BN, 5]
