From Background Notes [BN] for July 30th & 31st written
by Pastor Bob Brown:
The move to celebration frequently
passes through periods of trial and lament.
Israel’s ancient hymnbook, the Psalms,
offers examples of poetry-prayers that literally pour out their souls in
sadness and despondency before the supplicant is able to celebrate the triumph
of God in their lives. We hurt before we sing hallelujah. We weep before we
worship. We grieve before we glory. We are jaded before we are joyful. We cry
before we celebrate. Celebration is the hard won victory of the troubled self
in the face of uneven human experience. Joy is the tough stuff of
celebration for it passes through the wilderness before the promise land is in
sight. Joy is neither transient nor immediate gratification, but instead is the
settled condition of hearts at peace with God. [BN,15]
