Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

From Background Notes [BN] for Feb 6th & 7th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

When we say, “We believe,” the idea is that our whole life is oriented outward toward the Other in whose hands we confidently place our life.

Scoring points with God turns all of that upside down and makes out of faith some kind of monetary transaction, or simply a cold, factual affair that does the sums and accumulates value. In contrast, faith, understood biblically, assumes that persons are engaging with each other in ways that lead to true flourishing. Faith is a way of being in the world, that is oriented toward God and toward each other. As we shall discover in this study, faith originates at the core of our being as the most fundamental of human values and that lives by nothing less than the life of God Himself. On our ascent to the summit, we climb by faith. [BN,1]
