From Background Notes [BN] for July 5th &
6th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
Clearly, those who had been "set
free" recognized that freedom went deeper than political servitude. Hearts
bound by sin and death were set free by the liberating Jesus.
Once released from the old masters,
Christ followers were to guard their liberty and not allow themselves to fall
back into new forms of slavery. That is, "freedom from" made room for
"freedom for". Liberty is precious, but also precarious. Used
as an excuse to avoid all forms of restraint, it cycles backwards into a new
form of bondage. Slavery to self still makes one a slave. We are to have one
master, and that is Christ. [BN,8]
