Psalm 10:1

Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

From Background Notes [BN] for September 7th & 8th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Israel acknowledges that when God drops from their view, it is not because of any failure in Him, but as a result of their turning “to other gods.” God does not choose to be absent arbitrarily or impulsively in the biblical story, yet humans seem to push him out of the world to make room for other companions.

And He allows this insult to His character as an intentional path to the human self-discovery that the world without God in it goes dark. We see something of this in Romans 1:18-32 in the repeated expression, “God gave them up…” Having curtly shown God the door to His world, human beings learn to live with the consequence of this momentous discourtesy.  [BN,6]
