Mark 10:45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

From Background Notes [BN] for September 28th & 29th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

What Matthew and Mark both stress is the Son of Man as ransom for many, a phrase deserving a brief explanation. The term “ransom” translates the Greek word lutron which means “the price of release.”

In the Greek Old Testament (LXX), the word appears in connection with ransom paid for slaves (Leviticus 19:20), captives (Isaiah 45:13), and the freeing of human lives (Exodus 21:30; Numbers 35:31-32). Mixing servant language with ransom language opens up new meanings. Here is Jesus who becomes the servant so that through serving others he might thereby set them free in his ultimate act of service: giving his life a ransom. Authentic service involves the Servant entirely giving himself away to liberate slaves and captives. In so doing, Jesus transforms the nature of servanthood. [BN,9]
