Matthew 25:40

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

His “sheep” do this unconsciously, seemingly unaware of the positive effect on the coming kingdom. By contrast, the “goats” in the parable are equally unconscious of how their total disregard for the well-being of others negatively impacts the kingdom.


 
Both sheep and goats know what they are doing, but they fail to reckon on the consequences. And so, when Jesus the Shepherd-King calls all nations before him, he approaches his task at the beginning of a new day by isolating sheep and goats. The two species are unable to graze and herd together amicably, and the Shepherd knows the importance of separating one from the other. On judgment day, Jesus takes the responsibility for separating them.  [BN, 11]
