What Jacob witnesses
is filled with living images that bring heaven and earth into close proximity,
promising to heal the rift caused by the Fall. By identifying the “house of God”
and the “gate of heaven,”...
...Jacob frames his encounter in terms of the sacred space that only later would be associated with the physical Temple in Jerusalem. What matters to Jacob and to his descendents is simply, “God is in this place…!” Heaven, at its very root, is about being in the presence of God. [BN, 3]
