Genesis 12:1

The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

From Background Notes [BN] for March 16th & 17th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Abram started out bound to the locale of his birth, no doubt a proud resident of Ur with the prospect of remaining in the world’s largest city.

Like such cities, the wealth largely flowed inward, accumulating and multiplying for the good of the city. But the mission that led Abram out of the city, and away from the locale, had an entirely different premise. Abram was to become a source of blessing for “all peoples on earth.” Yes, Abram’s life would grow beyond his fondest imagination. Yes, he would discover a land where his descendents would become a great nation. Yes, his reputation would be well known. Still, the prospect of blessing the world through Abram’s new locale — his new land — seemed much more motivating than staying in Ur where he could just as easily have become famous. [BN, 2-3]
