2 Cor 8:5

And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.

From Background Notes [BN] for March 16th & 17th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

An attitude underlies the good example Paul highlights. It is the surrender of one’s life in the service of the Lord.

This is Paul’s intent in Romans 12:1 when he appeals for “living sacrifices” involving our bodies and our minds (12:2). Just as Jesus gave himself for the world, so the local congregation hears the call of the Gospel to do the same. Jesus is “the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5), and then he tells his followers, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Light originates at a point and then radiates beyond that point. What better image to capture the local-global relationship of the church in the world.  [BN, 4]
