Our suffering, loss, sickness, failure, and sadness are but the signs of mortality. This is a study about death, the inevitable human reality.

It is more than study about death, to be sure, one that leads us onward to hope beyond the grave. But it spends a considerable amount of time taking seriously this thing called death, drawing out the roadside far into the horizon of real persons who grappled with mortality, and who did so in the company of Jesus of Nazareth.[BN, 1]
