From Background Notes [BN] for Feb 20th & 21st written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
What does it mean to be
"seated" with Christ in the heavenlies?
To be "raised" meant to be
placed into the "realm of Christ", but to be "seated" means
to share the "authority of Christ". It means having a heavenly status
with heavenly power to overcome the power of sin and death. But we sit with him
precisely because we are already "in him". It is our "union with
Christ" that gives us the right to be in the heavenly places. We reside in
two places at the same time: 1) on earth; 2) in heaven. We are pragmatically
in the first, while we are positionally in the second. Our earthly
bodies remind us that we have "not yet" reached the completion of our journey, and there
yet remains for us a "final salvation", namely, "the redemption
of our bodies" (Romans 8:23). Elsewhere in Romans 8:18-39 Paul unfolds the
dramatic story of human salvation, looked at from the standpoint of "our
present sufferings". Still, we "already" live in a new realm and
have been seated with the exalted Jesus in the place of power and authority. [BN,8]
