Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

From Background Notes [BN] for Nov 8th & 9th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

The character of the unseen God, says Jesus, ought to influence the way we pray. In that way we honor the nature of God who dwells in secret, hidden ways, yet from there He brings life to His creation.

We are like God when we commune with Him “in secret,” allowing His revelation to us on His terms alone, unaffected by the approving glances of an adoring crowd. Jesus knew the contaminating effect of the crowd as they pressed against him in search of his gifts, grasping his robe, wanting his favor, and seeking his food — bread and fish or whatever miracle was on demand at the time. Prayer behind the closed door broke the cycle of public adoration and gave to Jesus and his followers the freedom to become the children of God in truth. [BN,6]
