What shapes the story of the whole collection is the man Samuel: how he was born, where he was raised, and to what important purpose God destined him.

In a nutshell, Samuel was the anointer of kings, or some would claim he was the kingmaker of Israel’s first monarchy. The truth is that Samuel was born into a simple Benjaminite family to a mother who had once been barren but whose faith in Yahweh and fervent prayer were rewarded with a son. [BN,3]
