From Background Notes [BN] for May 24th &
25th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
At this writing (2014), a prominent
movie currently on the big screen is Heaven is for Real. Todd and Sonja Burpo
are a real-life couple whose son Colton claims to have visited Heaven during a
near death experience. Colton recounts the details of his amazing journey with
childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before
his birth: things he couldn't possibly know.
Todd and his family are then challenged
to examine the meaning from this remarkable event. Based on the New York
Times best-selling book of the same name, the film challenges audiences
with the courage of a small-town father. Like a flood of recent faith-based
productions, this one prods and irritates a range of reviewers, with some
feeling pressured into faith. Still, all attempts at persuasion aside, the
overall theme encourages conversation about the unending question about life
after death. In a technological, therapeutic consumer age, where brain
chemistry meets the iPad, the old mystery about personal identity beyond the
grave simply doesn’t go away. [BN,1]
