From Background Notes [BN] for October 6th & 7th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
Our initial reaction to the two
questions and their answers might be: It doesn’t take much for unclean things
to make other things unclean, whereas becoming holy doesn’t happen by
second-hand contact with another holy thing.
Another way to state this is that
holiness doesn’t come as a by-product of another process. As every Jew knew,
God’s instructions about holiness were concise: “Be holy as I am holy”
(Leviticus 19:2; 20:7). Holiness comes as God’s gift of Himself to those
who truly seek Him; holiness is not the secondary outcome of being religious. [BN, 4]
