From Background Notes
[BN] for September 29th & 30th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
As every Jew would know, this is the 7th
of the Feast of the Tabernacles, occurring in the autumn, starting with the 15th
day of the 7th month (see Leviticus 23:34; Numbers 29:12). Why is this significant?
Torah required that all work stop on
the 8th day when the feast ended (Leviticus 23:36, 39; Numbers 29:35), thus the Word of
Yahweh comes to Haggai a day before this required Sabbath or rest from work.
The people would already have this new Word from God before the last day of the
feast arrived, and they would have sufficient time to reflect on that Word
without the distraction of labor. Further, they would better understand that
this new temple is not solely their work, but that of the God who gives
them the ability to build it. In ancient Israel, such feast days were periods
when God’s people remembered the great events of the past when Yahweh their God
broke through the obstacles they faced and gave them victory. The festival of Tabernacles
or Sukkot was no exception. [BN, 3]
