Ezra 5:2

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.

From Background Notes [BN] for September 8th & 9th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Notice the role of the prophets in the life of Zerubbabel, the royal governor, and of Jeshua, the high priest. The words used to describe that role are: “helping them.”

The Aramaic verb is sā‘ad, meaning “support, sustain, stay, feed, uphold.” The prophets supported the two leaders by being with them and speaking to them. Later in the text, the writer comments, “The eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received” (5:5). Therefore, three events combined to help the leadership of Judah:

1. The companionship of Haggai and Zechariah, two prophets of God.

2. The Word of Yahweh spoken through the prophets.

3. The providence of God in handling the affairs of nations for the benefit of His people. [BN, 8]
